Work Zone Awareness Week
Visit to Mountain View Elementary School in Waddell, AZ
April 10, 2008

Children at Mountain View Elementary School in Waddell, AZ in First and third grades learned a valuable lesson to share with their parents:  SLOW DOWN IN THE CONE ZONE!

Annie Parris, AZ LTAP Manager and Erika Blankenship, AZ LTAP Director spent a couple hours on April 10 with children from Mountain View Elementary Schools first and third grades.  They delivered age appropriate massages and conversation regarding Work Zones, including how in 2006, 31 people in Arizona did not get to go home due to dying within a Work Zone and they are to help their parents remember to SLOW DOWN IN THE CONE ZONE. The kids had fun with the materials provided:  sign suckers, work zone candies, hardhats, reflective orange ribbons, a work zone activity book with coloring activities, word searches, crosswords and more.  Each class room received the ATSSA Poster and ADOT Safety Calendar to hang up.

A video, titled:  How to Build a Road, was a 30 minute video developed for the 2-8 crowd teaching the process of how to build a road, including, which was the most favored clip of the video, blasting!  Lots of ooohs and aahhhs!

Thank you letters received from the students included:

“…Thank you for teaching us all about safety.  I will remind my parents to pay attention to the cones.” Noah, 3rd grade

“I really needed a hard hat because my little brothers always hit me on the head.”  Chelsea

“thank you for the move video, candey that was awesome and flavorful, and the construction helmet plus the sticker ribbon.  I still remember the slow zone sine and work zone sine and I have a lot of awareness over work zone areas!”  Sincerely, Trenton

Truly, Annie Parris, LTAP Manager, and Erika Blankenship, LTAP Director, enjoyed their time with the children and their eager and ACTIVE minds!
