The groundbreaking 2009 EveryOne Counts Safety Summit provides a forum for sharing information on best practices in engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency medical services to discuss opportunities and for identifying new approaches to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and life-changing injuries on Arizona roads. Arizona is the ONLY state listed by FHWA as a focus state in all 4 focus areas: Intersection, pedestrian, roadway departure, and speeding fatalities. On average, at least three people are killed everyday on Arizona’s roads. In 2006, the number of fatalities was 1,288, an increase of 22 percent over 2001. In 2007, there was a reduction of 17% with 1,066 fatalities. “The only acceptable number of fatalities is zero,” said Governor Janet Napolitano, “but it is encouraging to see the decrease in fatalities in 2007. This means our message to drive sober, fasten your seat belt, keep your attention on the road - and others - are working.”
