Road Maintenance Descriptions

RM01 Base and Subbase Repair
International Road Federation       16 Minutes

Illustrates nine steps for repair of base and subbase.  Shows on-site tests of moisture content of subgrade and base materials.

RM02 Base Repair
Utah Department of Transportation       12 Minutes
Base repair is the elimination of the cause of base failure.  This involves many steps, outlined on this tape.
RM03 CPR for City Streets
Iowa Concrete Pavement       12 Minutes

This video introduces a system for restoring pavement that is more economical and longer lasting.

RM04 Edge Rut Repair and Grade Gravel Shoulders
Utah Department of Transportation       11 Minutes

This video begins by showing viewers a properly constructed shoulder.  It continues by demonstrating the procedures for edge rut repair and grading gravel shoulders.

RM05 Finding Better Ways
Strategic Highway Research Program       19 Minutes

SHRP reports on research conducted on the best materials and procedures for the four repair categories: pothole repair, spall repair, crack sealing, and joint filling and sealing.  Also described is SHRP's long term pavement performance.

RM06 Patching Unpaved Roads
International Road Federation       12 Minutes

This video demonstrates how to patch gravel roads and the importance of quick repair of them to reduce costs.

RM07 Pavement Maintenance and Worker Safety
Strategic Highway Research Program       16 Minutes

This video introduces and summarizes new products developed under the SHRP program designed to improve efficiency of pavement maintenance operations while improving work zone safety.

RM08 Pothole Repair in Asphalt Concrete
Federal Highway Administration       13 Minutes

This video explains that potholes are caused by weak spots in roads due to heavy traffic or water saturation and reviews eight steps to repair every size of pothole.

RM09 "Potholes: Cause, Cures and Prevention"
U.S. Army Cold Region Research Laboratory       12 Minutes

Demonstration of pothole repair techniques; why potholes occur, how to fix them, how water and traffic cause them, and how to establish a pothole management program.

RM10 Preventative Maintenance: Project Selection
Federal Highway Administration       30 Minutes

This tape expands upon the scope of the first tape in this series (see MA00, Preventative Maintenance: Protecting Our Pavements), by focusing on the selection of the right treatment for the right road.  This tape provides a general overview of the various preventive maintenance treatment options available for both rigid and flexible pavements and their suitability for a given pavement condition.

RM11 Preventative Maintenance: Protecting Our Pavements
Federal Highway Administration       14 Minutes

A good overview of preventative maintenance.  Promotes a shift in funding from repair or reconstruction of damaged roads to maintaining a road's condition before it fails.  Defines and discusses the benefits of preventive maintenance.

RM12 Remove Minor Slides and Clean Cut Ditches
Caterpillar       30 Minutes

This video discusses the purpose of ditches and the steps needed to properly build ditches.  This video also discusses rock slides , clean cutting ditches, and safety.

RM13 "Repair of Depressions, Rutting and Corrugations"
International Road Federation       14 Minutes

The basic repair method for depressions, rutting and corrugations is to fill in the low areas with a leveling course of asphalt concrete and then to overlay the entire area with a wearing course.  This video describes the proper procedures for using this repair method with a motor grader using eight work steps.  Special considerations for placing and compacting each layer in a deep depression are illustrated.  The video also shows how to place and compact a thin overlay over the leveling course.

RM14 Road Reclamation More Ways to Cut Costs
Caterpillar       17 Minutes

This video explains that full depth road reclamation reuses the existing base material for a stable and safe road.  It was first used on low volume roads, but is now being used on alleys, city and county roads, and heavier volume roads.

RM15 Road Repair: Do the Right Thing at the Right Time
Minnesota LRRB       20 Minutes

How preventive road repair can save money compared to postponing work which costs more.

RM16 Road Reclamation
Caterpillar       12 Minutes
This video explains that road reclamation is done in place, using existing materials with asphalt emulsions added  all at a lower cost.
RM17 Selective Pavement Rehabilitation
Video University Production       34 Minutes

Selective repair permits rehabilitation of a single lane of pavement without paving the entire road width and shoulders.  The benefits and liabilities of milling are also explained.

RM18 Technical Advancement for Maintenance Workers (Chief Administrative Officers)
Strategic Highway Research Program       12 Minutes

This video presents the status of research activities in the area of maintenance cost effectiveness and snow and ice control.  These include an overview of safety research (barriers, lights and warning devices) and productivity improvements.  The emphasis is on reducing costs and improving safety and public satisfaction.

RM19 Technical Advancement for Maintenance Workers (Maintenance Managers and Crews)
Strategic Highway Research Program       15 Minutes

This video presents a status report on how research efforts undertaken by the Strategic Highway Research Programs will affect maintenance operations.  The four primary areas of concern involve improved pavement repair techniques, pavement preventative maintenance, snow and ice control, and short-term work zone safety.

RM20 Reading the Traveled Way
USDA                                                         16 Minutes

This video focuses on understanding what the condition of the road is and provides insight on how to proactively avoid costly repairs by properly addressing the road in its current condition. Shows rutting, wash boarding, potholes, destroyed road template, cracks, flour, loss of surfacing, excessive vegetation, water bypassing surface cross drains, damage or filled cattle guards, damage to bridges and damage to fords.

RM21 Reading beyond the Traveled Way
USDA                                                         16 Minutes

This video considers the natural functions happening beyond the roadway (rain, erosion) and how to use that knowledge before beginning maintenance operations to help minimize significant impacts on the road. It also covers gullies, cracks and slumps, roadside ditch relief culverts, live streams culverts, and brush removal.

RM22 Smoothing and Reshaping the Traveled Way
USDA                                                        17 Minutes

This video covers detailed step-by-step processes used for both smoothing and reshaping a road. It also covers crowned, in sloped and out sloped roads as well as transition sections.
