Gravel Roads Descriptions

GV01 Blading Unpaved Roads
Federal Highway Administration       22 Minutes

Illustrates practical aspects of motor grader operation to maintain unpaved roads; differences between blading and shaping; appropriate use of drags; and grading of intersections, driveways, bridge approaches, and railroad crossings.

GV02 Geotextile Installation on Gravel Roads
Oklahoma T2 Center       43 Minutes

Demonstrates the use of geotextiles on gravel roads.  Discusses woven and non-woven fabric; types of gravel to use; proper method for dumping rock on a soft roadbed; how to apply fabric to hillsides with rock outcropping; and how to apply fabric in wind.

GV03 Hardsurfacing a Gravel Road Using Pre-Mix Asphalt
Missouri Department of Highways       30 Minutes

This video explains using pre-mix asphalt while hard surfacing a gravel road.  The video demonstrates how the asphalt was delivered in belly dump trucks and tandem axle dump trucks.

GV04 Maintaining Granular Surfaces Roads
Iowa Department of Transportation       20 Minutes

This program was designed to help the motor grader operator properly maintain granular surfaced roads. Iowa DOT, designed this tape to demonstrate the problems they were having in their gravel roads.   It shows proper walk around inspection techniques, how speed plays a big part in grading, and the steps to use in order to grade the road properly.

GV05 Problems with Gravel Roads
Federal Highway Administration       55 Minutes

Gives a general overview of the problems associated with gravel roads.  A good tape for those who want to know how gravel roads fail.  Covers materials, environment, problems, grader equipment and techniques.

GV06 "Rural Roads a New Approach"
Montana State University       27 Minutes

Transportation technology is something that people take for granted.  Small communities in Montana rely on secondary funds to keep their rural roads maintained and working properly.  FHWA has created centers to generate new approaches in engineering so that this can save communities millions of dollars in fixing rural roads.

GV07 "Stabilization Holding the Road"
Iowa State University       22 Minutes

70% of our roads are not paved, that’s over 2 million miles of dust.  They say one vehicle per day can make 1 ton of dust per year.  This video will show how to build a high grade, soil stabilized road that will last longer with fewer dust.

GV08 Unsurfaced Road Inspection
US Army Cold Regions and Engineering Laboratory       8 Minutes

This video shows how to take measurements required for the unsurfaced road management system utilizing the inspection sheet found at the back of the Unsurfaced Roads Field Manual.  It shows how to actually take the measurements of the seven major road distresses: improper cross section, inadequate roadside drainage, corrugations, dust, ruts, and potholes.

GV09 Upgrading Gravel Roads
Montana State University       20 Minutes

This video demonstrates the techniques and cost evaluation of upgrading rural gravel roads.  It is directed at the problems that low maintenance budget rural agencies face in keeping their roads in good condition. Techniques for some types of maintenance are also discussed.  Utilizes a demonstration format.
