Concrete Descriptions

CN01 A Tied Concrete Shoulder
Portland Cement Association       20 Minutes

This video discusses the I-20 project in South Carolina from Georgia state line Northeast toward Aixen which was 6 miles.  It involved the undersealing of existing concrete pavement on I-20 and the full-depth repair of about 800 yards of pavement.

CN02 Alkali-Silica Testing
Strategic Highway Research Program       20 Minutes

This video explains that Alkali-Silica reactivity (ASR) is one of the major causes of cracking on concrete and discusses it by:  1. Determination  2. Prevention  3. Testing (new and conventional).

CN03 Bituminous Concrete Paving
Washington Department of Transportation       45 Minutes

Describes three areas of construction inspection: preliminary checks and equipment; surface preparation and tack coats; and delivery of hot-mix paving, compaction, and final product acceptance. Procedures and inspection requirements are in accordance with Washington State DOT standards, but general information applies.

CN04 Concrete Pavement Overlays
Strategic Highway Research Program       22 Minutes

This tape gives a detailed presentation of materials, methods, and procedures for banded overlays and non-branded overlays.  Methods for choosing procedures and related testing methods are discussed.

CN05 Early Openings of Full-Depth Concrete Repairs
Strategic Highway Research Program       10 Minutes

This video discusses the major considerations for early openings in concrete repairs and although fast setting concrete will be used the real secret is planning, scheduling, and evaluating.

CN06 Field Testing for Quality Control in Fresh Concrete
Portland Cement Association       59 Minutes

This video exhibits the importance for quality control with fresh concrete.

CN07 Finishing and Curing Concrete
Portland Cement Association       30 Minutes
This video recommends different practices for finishing and curing concrete to ensure optimum moisture content.
CN08 Freeze Thaw Testing
Strategic Highway Research Program       25 Minutes

Freezing and thawing are some causes of concrete deterioration.  This video covers the causes and prevention of freeze/thaw as well as conventional and new tests.

CN09 Full-Depth Repair of Jointed Concrete
Strategic Highway Research Program       18 Minutes

Five major topics relating to repair of jointed concrete pavement: distress requiring full depth repair, field survey, transverse joint design, materials, and repair procedures.

CN10 Partial-Depth Repair of Concrete Pavement
Strategic Highway Research Program       15 Minutes

This video demonstrates repair of spells at joints and mid-sections of concrete pavements.  Materials and procedures are shown for repair of damage limited to the upper third of the concrete slab.  High early-strength concrete mixes are discussed, and the repair process is demonstrated.  Tests are shown for deterioration and determination of repair boundaries.  Surface preparation is demonstrated, including options for removal of materials, cleaning, and application of a bonding agent to the repair site.  Finally, placement and consolidation of the concrete, finishing, and curing procedures are presented.

CN11 Patch PCC with PCC and with Bituminous Materials
Utah Department of Transportation       23 Minutes

This video explains the nine steps to properly repairing small cracks on highways:  marking the area, saw cutting, excavating, cleaning, placing joint material, coating with epoxy to bond with old concrete, placing concrete, finishing, and curing.

CN12 Quality Control of Concrete -On Site Part 1
Strategic Highway Research Program       14 Minutes

This video discusses methods for the field sampling and testing of concrete for temperature and slump.

CN13 Quality Control of Concrete -On Site Part 2
Strategic Highway Research Program       17 Minutes

This video discusses methods for the field sampling and testing of concrete for air content and unit weight.

CN14 Quality Control of Concrete -On Site Part 3
Strategic Highway Research Program       18 Minutes

This video presents new methods developed by SHRP for the field sampling and testing of concrete.  Testing is divided into two areas: As-Delivered Concrete, using water content measurement and thermal effects evaluation, and As-Placed Concrete using maturity monitoring.

CN15 Quality Control of Concrete -On Site Part 4
Strategic Highway Research Program       18 Minutes

This video presents new methods developed by SHRP for the field sampling and testing of concrete.  Additional testing As-Placed Concrete include temperature-matched curing, pulse velocity testing, and nuclear density testing.

CN16 Recycling Concrete
Minnesota Department of Transportation       20 Minutes
This video discusses concrete recycling in Minnesota from Worthington 16 miles north to Fulda and indicates a savings of $600,000 compared to conventional methods.
CN17 Recycling Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement
North Dakota Department of Transportation       20 Minutes

This video explains the I-29 (North bound lane only) recycling project of concrete for aggregate in new concrete.  The job is 10.4 miles long and the existing pavement is 9" continuously reinforced with asphalt shoulders.

CN18 Testing Ready Mixed Concrete in the Field
Construction Materials Engineering Council, Inc.       58 Minutes

This training tape contains up-to-date instruction on the 7 required ASTM's for fresh concrete testing. Additionally, both wet-sieving and beams are covered, and a special section individually addresses consolidation.

CN19 White Topping
Portland Cement Association       40 Minutes

This video discusses the I-70, Sherman County, Kansas white-topping project consisting of:  1. The existing pavement  2. Its distress  3. Location of the project  4. Length of project  5. Project projected cost.

CN20 The Slump Test
ADOT Video Production Services       10 Minutes

This video is demonstrating how to perform a concrete slump test.
