Asphalt Descriptions

AS01 Asphalt Crack Treatment
Minnesota LRRB       15 Minutes

Describes the differences between sealing and filling cracks in asphalt pavement and how and when to apply treatment.  Compares ways to clean and apply fill or seal cracks.  Stresses that there are many correct ways to repair cracks, depending on your budget.

AS02 Asphalt Emulsion Spray Application
The Asphalt Institute       23 Minutes

This program lists and explains the benefits of asphalt emulsion and aggregate, including skid resistance, better line striping, and longer road life.  Also outlines the procedure involved in application.

AS03 Asphalt Overlays: The Four P's
The Asphalt Institute       15 Minutes

Discusses asphalt overlays; importance of the four P's: planning, preparation, production, and placement; and concepts decision makers must consider in hot mix asphalt overlays.

AS04 Asphalt Paving Inspection
Federal Highway Administration       60 Minutes

Gives a general overview of hot mix asphalt paving operations and inspecting the work.  Covers basic responsibilities, and some common problems with paving operations.

AS05 Asphalt Roadway Rehabilitation
National LTAP Program       6 Minutes

This video shows and explains the process of road rehabilitation with asphalt pavement.

AS06 Bituminous Materials Inspection
Arizona Department of Transportation       10 Minutes

This video reviews asphalt concrete inspections stressing the importance of the different aggregates involved in the mix process.  There are two different kinds of mix plants:  1. Batch plants - mix one sole load at a time and  2. Drum dryer plants - capable of mixing and storing several loads for hauling.

AS07 Bituminous Surface Replacement
Utah Department of Transportation       9 Minutes

This video explains the process of replacing asphaltic surfaces with a bituminous mix.

AS08 Cold in Place Recycling
Asphalt Recycling and Reclaiming Association       10 Minutes

Describes cold in-place recycling process, core samples testing, design recycling content procedures, advantages, and disadvantages.  Illustrates recycling machinery.

AS09 Crack Repair in Asphalt Pavement
International Road Federation       12 Minutes
Describes the correct work procedure and materials for filling and sealing linear alligator cracks.
AS10 Here's How a Hot-Mix Plant Works
Video University Production       55 Minutes

This video begins with cold feed and is followed by the batch and drum mix plant processes, the exhaust system, and ends with load out.

AS11 How to Prevent Segregation
Video University Production       26 Minutes

This video focuses on pavement techniques such as options for grade control, paver units, preparing a paver for operation for segregation prevention.

AS12 Hydrated Lime: Key to Improved Asphalt Pavements
National Lime Association       21 Minutes

The addition of hydrated lime is shown to improve durability and lower costs of asphalt while providing a more permanent bond.

AS13 Lane Leveling Bituminous Surface
Utah Department of Transportation       11 Minutes
This video discusses the procedures to follow to correct wheel rutting or level the traveled lane.
AS14 "Lime, the Versatile in Construction"
National Lime Association       26 Minutes

Illustrates the applications that lime can have in soil stabilization/construction procedures.  Shows highway base/subbase stabilization, airport runways, building foundations, etc.  Contains mix of technical and non-technical language.

AS15 Maintaining Asphalt Roads: Blade Patching
New Mexico Department of Transportation       55 Minutes
Illustrates the process of blade patching.  Process involves cleaning and preparing the surface to be patched, laying material, lifts, tapers, compaction, final rolling and clean-up.
AS16 Pavement and Compaction Training
Video University Production       43 Minutes

Covers the basics of paving machine operations and the use of various types of rollers.

AS17 Paving Techniques
Video University Production       37 Minutes

Looks at equipment innovations to improve pavement quality.  Quality is measured by pavement smoothness and annualized costs.  Emphasis is placed on the use of a material transfer vehicle.

AS18 Recycling Asphalt Pavement
National Asphalt Pavement Association       22 Minutes

Explains that 93% of roads are asphalt and that recycling will conserve resources, energy, and money.  Recycling asphalt is cost saving because of a lack of aggregate and the cost in fuel to have it hauled.  Hot-mix material is either ran through hot drums or batch plants.

AS19 Recycling Procedures
Montana State University       35 Minutes

Discusses seal coat, ideal times to do jobs and what to expect when temperatures are too cold or too hot.  All pavement is recyclable, and there are three ways to do it:  1. Surface,  2. hot-mix recycling ,  3. cold-mix recycling.

AS20 Relationship of Asphalt Mix
Transportation Research Board       14 Minutes

This video talks about desirable mix properties: durability, flexibility, stability, fatigue resistance, skid resistance, impermeability, and work ability.  Also discussed, are two basic mix designs:  Marshall design which is used in the Eastern U.S. and the Hveem design used in the Western U.S.

AS21 Single and Multiple Surface Treatments
International Road Federation       15 Minutes

This video gives the what, the why, and the how in construction of successful surface treatments on unpaved and paved roads.  It covers good construction practices in eight detailed work steps.  The preparation of the surface to be treated, testing of the asphalt distributor, and checking the weather are discussed.  Materials required for surface treatments are presented.  Proper procedures for applying the asphalt, spreading the aggregate and compacting the aggregate are demonstrated.  Construction of smooth transverse and longitudinal joints is also described.

AS22 "Special Hot Mixes, SMA-ATPB-Rubberized"
Video University Production       46 Minutes

This video describes three special hot mixes and their uses: stone mastic asphalt (SMA), asphalt treated permeable base (ATPB), and rubberized hot mix asphalt.

AS23 SUPERPAVE- Pavement That Performs
Strategic Highway Research Program       5 Minutes

This video explains that superpave uses new specifications, tests, and mix design systems to give agencies better ways to pave Americas roads.

AS24 Uses of Asphalt Rubbers
Asphalt Rubber Producers     12 Minutes

Asphalt rubber is the rubber binder from scrap tire that can be used in hot-mix applications and chipseals. This is more cost effective than overlays or total reconstruction of asphalt surface.
