Course Descriptions
Work Zone
Traffic Control II
Those enrolled must complete Work Zone I prior to taking this class.
Participants will receive instruction in Legal Liability, and Inspection and
Maintenance. During the class there will be 2 breakout sessions where
participants will plan and demonstrate traffic control set-ups.
Roadside Hazard Identification for Transportation
Personnel
One-third of all highway fatalities result from vehicles leaving the road and
hitting some fixed object or overturning, and an astounding two-thirds of
fatalities in rural areas are run-off-road crashes. This course will focus how
to reduce these fatalities, with focus on application of the Roadside Design
Guide. Areas covered include clear zone, slopes, sign supports, trees,
guardrails, end treatments, and bridge transitions, and identification of
problem areas.
Drainage Course
This course will provide a simplified discussion of the relationship between
pavement maintenance and water related damage. With this foundation, maintenance
workers will discuss various methods of providing and maintaining drainage
systems. Proper construction techniques will be identified.
Asphalt Pavement Maintenance
This course will cover the economics of timely pavement maintenance, the common
causes of pavement failure & various repair techniques. This course will be
presented in a lecture format with emphasis on class participant & shared
experiences. Objective is emphasis on the planned strategy of cost-effective
treatments to an existing roadway system and its appurtenances that preserves
the system, retards future deterioration, and maintain or improves the
functional condition of the system (without substantially increasing structural
capacity.)
Technical Math
Designed to give an applied introduction to solving technical math problems,
both in and out of the field.
Tort Liability/Risk Management
This workshop identifies common liability issues faced by street departments and
highway agencies in areas including traffic control devices, roadway surface
conditions, shoulders, work zones, roadsides, etc. Risk management strategies to
reduce/prevent accidents and tort liability suits will be presented, and how to
handle yourself in a deposition/court appearance will also be discussed.
Signing and Striping II
The course is a continuation of Signing & Striping I designed to give the
student a detailed view of signing and striping as per the Manual of Uniform
Traffic Control Devices.
Management and Supervisory Skills for
First-time Managers
This course is an introduction to supervision. The participants will learn about
making the change from front line employee to supervisor; leadership styles,
decision making, communications, how to give instructions, conflict management,
team building, and listening skills.
